leadership & team building
organization of events:
As the morale and events manager, I organized events in which the BoonePubs staffs participated, including: workday food signups and holiday events.
Our staff has mandatory workdays on the Thursday and Saturday leading up to every deadline. To deter staffers from leaving to get food or snacks, I organized dinner and breakfast/lunch for the two workdays. This helped make the hours more productive by limiting their time away on a "food run."
In October, I organized a Halloween party for our newspaper and yearbook staffs to intermingle. Sometimes our staffs feel divided. At the Halloween party, we had a potluck lunch and painted pumpkins. This was effective in tying the staffs together.

birthday celebrations:
To make sure everyone on staff feels valued, we celebrate everyone's birthday. Our adviser, Bridgette Norris, purchases the first cake (for the summer birthdays) and then whoever had the last birthday buys the cake for the next staffer's birthday.
When we break out the cake, approximately five minutes before class ends, I snag the aux and play "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang. (If the aux is unavailable, EIC Shayna Eaton and I a cappella the song). After getting through a couple "woo-hoos," we sing happy birthday and then the birthday staffer, junior Aubrey Dean is pictured, makes a wish as he/she cuts into the cake, rather than candles since those are a fire hazard.

Camp Orlando:
Every summer, our yearbook and newspaper staffs attend Camp Orlando, a four-day journalism workshop. I've attended Camp Orlando four times, and the summer of 2018 was the most impactful in the categories of building my leadership skills and bringing our staff together.
Going into camp, much of our staff did not know each other. After talking to my adviser, I decided to room with two people who were new to staff and one of the new editors. This rooming assignment allowed these two newbies to feel more comfortable on staff.
I wanted our staff to win the spirit flag. In my previous three years, we had not won it. I went into camp with a strong desire to unite our publication, to ensure that we have a positive year and to win the spirit flag. After beating our buckets and screaming as loud as we could, we earned the spirit flag for a day and it was beyond exciting.
Camp Orlando provided me the opportunity to showcase my leadership skills and rally the staff to a more unified and excited year.

including diversity in our publications:
With an editor position dedicated to including diversity and spelling names correctly, our publication strives to represent our racially diverse student body. The caucasian students at Boone tend to be of a higher socioeconomic background than the other races. All of the spreads we produce strive to include as many grades and races as possible, while balancing males and females. Some of the spreads, like the girls' volleyball spread, will only include one gender, but we include as many races and grades as we can. When our staff makes an effort to include a variety of people on our spreads, we are more closely representing our student body.
