yearbook spread design: student life
ONE FOR THE BOOKS: As a first year staffer, I designed this spread with the Student Life editor, Olivia Page. To follow the cluttered theme of the book, we added a background to reinforce the theme and topics touched on the spread. As one of the feature spreads, we wanted it to be content heavy with modular elements, which also reinforced the "All Over the Place" theme. (Published 2017 Legend)
LET'S STICK TOGETHER: For this spread, we wanted to include as many people and their stickers as possible. We also wanted this page to feel like it flowed, achieved by the shape in the background. When I first heard I received this spread, I visualized someone drinking out of his sticker-clad water bottle, so it only fit for that to be the dominant element. (To be published 2019 Legend)
DO IT FOR THE CULTURE: This spread featured exchange students and students who moved to our school from other countries. The map in the background emphasized that these students lived somewhere else. To incorporate theme elements, I included colored borders on the images the students provided. (Published 2018 Legend)
yearbook spread design: sports, academics and clubs
NEW TEAM FUELS DRIVE: I chose boys volleyball as my sport beat, so this spread was my responsibility with staffer L'Wren Johnson. After going to tournaments and games to acquire pictures, I created this layout. As content-driven design creates more interesting and cohesive layouts, I design spreads after I obtain all of my pictures.(Published 2018 Legend)
MUSIC CHALLENGES SKILLS: For this spread, we wanted to include a variety of students and instruments. The placement of the dominant photograph in the top left corner pulls the reader across the spread. The clustering of pictures allowed me to emphasize the separate bands included in the music concerts. (Published 2017 Legend)
BUDDIES TAKE THE CAPITOL: This spread featured our awareness clubs, including Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Best Buddies and Gay-Straight Alliance. As GSA students can often feel like the minority, L'Wren and I made the decision to feature a GSA member in the dominant photo. The student in the dominant picture designs a battery-powered toy, after a presentation from the Zebra Coalition, a network of organizations providing services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and youth. The impact of this dominant is strong, as the student felt empowered by the presentation and his actions following it. As the awareness clubs depend on their social media to remind members about their meetings and to draw new members to the club, a modular element housing images they posted seemed fit. CLASS OF 2019: The most challenging part of designing the senior panoramic spread was differentiating it from past years, the 2019 Legend book focuses on our students' stories. I chose to feature three students who decided to graduate early. I wanted to incorporate a seniors-only tradition: Senior Snake. The excitement behind Senior Snakes is felt when a freshman steps on campus, and it is a rite of passage to participate in at least one before graduation. The importance of this tradition emphasized its necessity to be on this spread. (To be published 2017 Legend)
TEACHER OF THE YEAR/SUPPORT PERSON OF THE YEAR: This page was to honor our Teacher and Support Person of the Year. Usually we write a story about them, but in 2018 we wanted to leave it up to exactly what they said, so we utilized a question and answer as the format. (Published 2018 Legend)
